On Wednesday, Dianne Fuller, FCH board member and the daughter-in-law of Millard and Linda, led devotions, which she dedicated to the masons. “The challenge is not the bricks and mortar; it’s not the food and water, the plans, or the materials. We always have enough resources when we do God’s work,” she said. “The challenge is believing that we can do it. Believing that we can work together to eliminate poverty housing.” The blitz builders were up to the challenge because on hump day, the walls were almost done and the roofs were starting to go on. Everyone began to relax and enjoy the gracious hospitality and hard work of our Salvadoran hosts, who were led by one very unusual American with a huge heart for the needy in El Salvador.

El Salvador: Who We Are Building With

Maria, Mauricio, and José AntonioThe Ochoas are a multi-generation family that lives on the banks of the Comalapa River in San Luis Talpa on land they have been able to squat on, rent-free, thanks to a connection through their church. This river frequently floods in the rainy season; last spring a severe storm killed several dozen people and washed out a major bridge in a nearby community. In addition to dealing with this precarious living situation, the family now faces a condition all too common in poor communities around the world: its breadwinner is suffering from a medical problem and cannot work, forcing his 13-year-old nephew to quit school and take a low-paying, unskilled job to keep the family afloat financially.

Blitz Build Volunteers Make It Happen

Mac McCaslin of IndianaA group of men confined behind prison walls helped Mac McCaslin build walls that will allow 16 families to start a new life in El Salvador. A chaplain for two Indiana prisons, Mac shared with the inmates the story of The Fuller Center blitz build in a rural, impoverished region of Central American. Even though some of them only make 60 cents a day, an offering to help cover expenses for Mac’s trip raised about $400.
